Installing alarm sensors regarding ADT?

  • Well, I'm in need of extra motion sensors for my home and the subcontracted security company that installed my alarm is quoting a ridiculous price of $120 per sensor. Well I can get the sensors online for $50 each brand new. The thing is, they wont guarantee the sensors even though I would go through them for installation. I know how to install the sensors and I would have to call ADT my monitor to tell them that new sensors were added. My question is will I have to state that I'm an installer and give some kind of special code when I call ADT telling them that new zones where added or state the company I work for if i were an installer or could I just tell them the zones with out any questions asked?
    P.S: I am under a 3 year contract with ADT, but the system is mine.

  • Just wire them in if you know how and look to see if it needs programmed. You should have paperwork on how to do this. if there is not enough ports then you can always series sensors.

  • If you are adding them to new un-used zones on your alarm panel, the zones will have to be programmed or they will probably do nothing since most installers don't activate unused zones. If you already have a motion detector, you can hook new devices in series on that existing zone and not have to program or even notify ADT of new alarm conditions.
    Let me know if you need technical advice on how to wire them in.

    EDIT; Wireless is a different story. The sensors need to be individually programmed into the system. Do you have the installer level programming code and a programming guide? Installers don't usually give them up. I don't work with ADT's central station much, but you should be able to test the sensor after it's installed, (put system on disregard with ADT first), and call them with your account #, ask them what signal they got and ask if they can add that signal as an interior alarm condition. They should be using Contact ID format which has a pre-defined definition for each type of signal transmitted, and maybe they will automatically respond to it as an alarm point, or maybe they will be difficult like ADT has a tendency to be, and insist on having a dealer do the work and possibly charge you extra for the additional conditions.

    Edit; ADT doesn't care what you do with your system as long as you continue to pay them their monitoring fees, but their Central Station may be difficult to work with.
