Identify two advantages that a machine main memory has over disk?

January 6th, 2009
  • 1)READ speed
    2)WRITE speed

  • The other advantage of disk is cost. Big difference between 128GB of RAM in cost vs 128GB of hard drive.

Another positive advantage is number of reads/writes. Disks will have sectors fail at a faster rate than portions of RAM becoming not available.
The difference is though that a disk can mark sectors as bad and move on. RAM chips will fail should they lose their integrity. There is some margin of err as we have mitigated parity rules but I still don't think their ability to recover from failure is that great.

  • Main memory has only ONE advantage, access speed. Access to memory is lightning fast compared o access speed of a disk. Memory access speed is measured in nanoseconds while a disk is measured in milliseconds, a factor of 1,000,000 faster. The disk HAS one clear advantage, no loss of contents when the power goes down...
