Can two different religions mary each other?

January 6th, 2009
  • If there was a Christian girl and a Catholic guy, could they marry??

  • Sorry to correct you. but not only are catholics christians, they are the first christian group. all other christian sects splintered off from catholicism. i couldn't marry a protestant when they follow so many man-made false unbiblical doctrines.

  • Of course.

    Besides, aren't Catholics Christians too?

  • Legally? Yes. In the Catholic Church? No.

The Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) speaks of the tragedy of Christian disunity in the heart of the home.

    From the CCC:

1634 Difference of confession between the spouses does not constitute an insurmountable obstacle for marriage, when they succeed in placing in common what they have received from their respective communities, and learn from each other the way in which each lives in fidelity to Christ. But the difficulties of mixed marriages must not be underestimated. They arise from the fact that the separation of Christians has not yet been overcome. The spouses risk experiencing the tragedy of Christian disunity even in the heart of their own home. Disparity of cult can further aggravate these difficulties. Differences about faith and the very notion of marriage, but also different religious mentalities, can become sources of tension in marriage, especially as regards the education of children. The temptation to religious indifference can then arise.

  • Rather strange question... Do you mean to say that Catholics are not Christians? Then, whether they can do it or not, is entirely up to them, as well as their pastors and counselors. But whether it is wise for a guy and a girl from different denominations to marry is another question. I, for one, would not recommend it.

  • I don't believe there is any law against that. However, that is not to say that certain individuals within those different wouldn't feel that it is wrong.

  • yes, two people of different religions can marry. who would perform the ceremony might be questioned, but there is no reason that wouldn't work.

jsn- Catholics are Christian. Christian means one believes in Christ. (Why can't people understand this concept!??!?!?!?!?!- sorry for my mini-rant)

  • Why not?
I had to talk to my friend about this the other day. See, her boyfriend is a Christian and she doesn't have a religion.
He was worried that they couldn't work out because of their different beliefs, but I told him it doesn't matter what religion they are as long as they are both open minded about it all. :]

  • yes my mam (C of E) married a atheist and this year they had there 30th anniversary...

  • Can they? Yes. Should they? No.

Before anyone marries they should sit down and discuss what they think doctrinally. They should consider how much their theology impact the other decisions they will make. Such as raising children.

Do not be unequally yoked with unbelievers. For what partnership has righteousness with lawlessness? Or what fellowship has light with darkness? What accord has Christ with Belial? Or what portion does a believer share with an unbeliever? What agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; as God said, "I will make my dwelling among them and walk among them, and I will be their God, and they shall be my people.
    (2Co 6:14-16)
